Job Title:
Transcriptionist

Description:
Transcribes the recorded dictation of physicians and allied health personnel.

Essential Responsibilities:
1. Transcribes the machine-recorded dictation of individual physicians and clinical support personnel at a minimum of 78 minutes of dictation per day based on an 8 hour shift. Weekly calculations may be used to average the daily requirement.
2. Transcribes with a minimum accuracy rate of 90% based on random monitoring of transcribed reports.
3. Determines the authorized recipients of copies (as indicated by the cc’s shown on each report) for each report transcribed, with a minimum of a 90% accuracy rate.
4. Prints and distributes reports according to the established procedure.
5. Access the dictation system computer control monitor to assign work and check the dictation system’s status.
6. Serves as a resource person for answering inquiries about the status of dictated
reports.
7. Provides services to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients and adapts the service as needed.
8. Follows hospital infection control policies, including body substance isolation and proper hand hygiene before and after contact with patients, handling of food, and after hands are contaminated with any body fluids, secretions or excretions.
9. Understands his/her responsibility to inform patients, family and visitors of the
importance of hand hygiene in all environments.

Other Job Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assists the Transcription Supervisor or Team Leader with the organization and
maintenance of the procedure manuals by keeping current samples of transcribed
reports, incorporating new procedures and revising procedures as necessary.
2. Assists with the maintenance and purging of face sheets used in the transcription of reports.
3. Copies all transcribed reports and distributes the reports according to procedure.
4. Assists with the maintenance and operation of the dictating equipment and printer by reporting equipment breakdowns to the Transcription Supervisor or team Leader and placing service calls as needed.

Requirements:
Education - The ability to read, write, and speak English, with a high school
diploma or GED preferred.
Experience - minimum of one (1) year’s experience as a medical transcriptionist,
preferably in a hospital setting. Consideration will be given to
transcription experience in other health care settings, such as a
physician’s office.
- Certificate of completing a formal transcription course may be
substituted for the minimum experience.

Skills:
1. Keyboard transcription at a rate sufficient to meet and maintain the minimum transcription production standard.
2. Microsoft Word applications skills.
3. Digital dictation system knowledge and experience preferred.


Abilities:
1. Knowledge of basic medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, proper grammar, spelling and punctuation.
2. Knowledge of medical transcription techniques
3. The ability to learn and understand general policies and procedures relative to the maintenance of medical records and the operation of a Health Information Management Department.
4. Ability to establish rapport and maintain effective working relationships.
